Steps in, calories out. No age field, because age isn't in the equation.
A Japanese pedometer was sold as the manpo-kei, "10,000-step meter." That's the whole origin. No study.
Calculators promising a step target "for your age and weight" divide a calorie number by a step cost. So does this one. You can just see the division.
Mass, distance, gradient. Nothing else.
The ACSM walking equation puts oxygen cost at VO₂ = 0.1·v + 1.8·v·g + 3.5
ml/kg/min, with v in m/min and g the grade. Drop the resting
3.5 for net cost, convert to distance, and speed cancels:
net kcal = (0.5 + 9g) × weight_kg × km
Flat ground, that's 0.5 × kg × km.
Net means above resting. Gross numbers are bigger and look better, but they count calories you'd burn on the sofa. Subtract those from your intake and you've counted them twice.
7,700 kcal ≈ 1 kg of fat. Holds for a few weeks. Then a lighter body burns
less on the same walk, and appetite fills part of the gap.
The table shows both lines. At one year the honest one is about half the naive one.
No step count unlocks fat loss. More steps, more calories, near-linear. The threshold is invented.
Walking, 3–6 km/h, measured ground. Running costs more per meter, about 1 kcal/kg/km.
Stride comes from height × 0.414, a population average. Measure yours if
you can: stride error scales every number here.
